CALIBK12 is an email forum (listserv) serving school librarians in California. It is a non-commercial list. Any advertising on this list must be approved by the list manager, George Pilling.

********** HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO CALIBK12 **********

1. Easy way - use the sign up form at the bottom of the page on the California School Library Association's website. www.csla.net

or 2. Go to http://lists.sjsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/calibk12 and use the form under "subscribing" to sign on.

You can subscribe at more than one address.

Note to commercial subscribers:

· You may be a subscriber to Calibk12.

· You may not advertise.

· You may not send notice to the group about your products.

· You may respond individually to an expressed concern of one of the members of Calibk12 if you have a product that answers a question or need.

· You may not add Calib subscribers to your mailing list.

Any violation will result in your removal from the list and a lot of bad publicity. If you have any questions, please contact the list moderator.

********** HOW TO POST MESSAGES TO CALIBK12 **********

Send messages to CALIBK12 at this address (click here to send message.) The address is calibk12 at lists.sjsu.edu with the @ sign replacing the word at and no spaces. Messages will be delivered to everyone on the list. If you reply to a message, it will only be sent to the person who wrote it.

You must send your postings from the email address under which you subscribed, or they will be rejected.

********** LIST COURTESY **********

Use a signature line on all postings.
Use a subject in all postings, and mark your messages in the subject line "Target" or "Query" if you want responses, "Hit" if you have compiled responses and "Comment" as appropriate.
Refrain from publicly slamming anyone.
Post "hits" of the replies you get to a question of interest to the whole list.
Refrain from political commentary (this is CSLA policy.) The only exception is the CSLA legislative committee may announce a candidate's favorable position on libraries and may recommend contacting legislators about library issues.
Do not advertise for yourself, but please do mention good products and services that we can all benefit from.

**********HOW TO MANAGE YOUR CALIBK12 ACCOUNT**********

To manage your account

Go to http://lists.sjsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/calibk12

Put in your email address in the box at the very bottom of the page.

On the second page there is a gray bar "email my password to me".

Click on this and your new password will be emailed to you. This password was randomly generated when you signed in unless you used the method #2 above and chose your own password.

After you have your password, use the bottom-most box to sign in to your account at http://lists.sjsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/calibk12. Here you can change your password, unsubscribe, set the account to digest, and many other things.

If you have trouble, email the list manager.

********** DIGESTS **********

All messages posted to this list are also available in daily digests (one long message per day.) If you wish to receive messages in digest format, change your account attributes by using the method above.

********** POSTPONE **********

If you are going on vacation and wish to stop the mail from CALIBK12 temporarily, use the manage your account procedure above and click on disabled in the Mail Delivery box on your attributes page. Or just unsubscribe and subscribe again when you return.

********** ACCESS TO CALIBK12 ARCHIVES **********

Postings to CALIBK12 since February 2007 are available at http://lists.sjsu.edu/pipermail/calibk12.

CALIBK12 postings from August, 2001 through January 2007 are also available, but the process is not easy. Search the list by sending the message below to listproc@listproc.sjsu.edu :

SEARCH CALIBK12 -ALL keyword1 & keyword2

For example, if you want to find if anyone has posted messages about accelerated reader, you would send this message:

SEARCH CALIBK12 -ALL accelerated & reader (NOTE: the spaces and dashes must be exactly this way.)

This command returns a list of archives which contain those messages. Each archive, or LOG, is partly summarized. (If there are no hits, the return mail will be empty.)

Next, you must ask to see the archive you want to read. Send the message below to listproc@listproc.sjsu.edu:

GET CALIBK12 LOGmmddyy (where mmddyy is the date of the log you want to see.)

This command returns the archive for that day.

********** HOW TO GET MORE HELP **********

Please email the list manager, George Pilling, with any problems. The address is calibk12-owner at lists.sjsu.edu where the at is replaced with the @ sign and there are no spaces.

********** TROUBLESHOOTING **********

Problems with sending mail to the list
The most common reason subscribers cannot send mail to the list is that their subscribed address and their return address do not match. Sometimes this happens without you knowing it, as when a district gets a new server. To check:

Send yourself an email

Open it. The return address should be at the top of the email.

If that matches your subscribed address, all is fine.

If the return address is different, go to http://lists.sjsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/calibk12 and subscribe with the new address.

Then if you get two of everything you may have to ask me to unsubscribe your old address.

Not getting postings
The most common reason that people do not get their CALIBK12 emails is that their mailbox is full. Please remember to clean out your mailbox. Every time your mailbox is full, I have to deal with another rejected message.
The second most common reason is SPAM blocking. Some districts have installed SPAM blocking software that rejects everything from a listserv. Add this address to your address book: calibk12-bounces@lists.sjsu.edu. Ask your tech people to "white list" all mail from sjsu.edu and lists.sjsu.edu - this should help.

SPAM
So far, the list of subscribers to CALIBK12 has not been stolen by any SPAMMING companies. It is unlikely that this will happen at this time.

CALIBK12 is an open list, so anyone can subscribe. So far we have had few problems with that. If we close the list, we would have to find someone with a lot of time on her hands to moderate every message.
